Chlamydia Infection on the Rise
More young Americans than expected are infected with Chlamydia trachomatis, the bacterium that causes the sexually transmitted disease chlamydia, according to the ongoing National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health. Current statistics show that one in 25 young adults -- or 4 percent -- have the bacterium. Chlamydia is the most frequently transmitted STD in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. If untreated, chlamydia can damage a woman's reproductive organs, causing infertility.
